The Lady Govs basketball team ended its regular season last Friday by honoring its seniors but came up short on the court as Appomattox nipped the Nelson squad, 57-54.

Nelson jumped on the Lady Raiders 23-12 in the first quarter and at the half took a 30-23 lead into the locker room.

“The girls played well on Friday seniors night. Nelson jumped out on Appomattox to a 12-point lead around halftime in the third. We couldn’t hit a shot from the outside, just scoring 4 points in the third quarter as Appomattox closed the gap and took the lead with a little foul trouble,” Nelson coach Petey Vaughan said.

“It was tough to play our style of game. We fought till the end tying the game up but we kept putting Appomattox on the line where they won.”

The Nelson offense left the gym in the third quarter with a mere four points posted. In the final stanza, Nelson woke up and drilled the scoreboard for 20 points but the Appomattox team added 16 and that would be plenty for the Dogwood district season finale.

Alexis Martin scored 13 points followed by Hailea White and Anayaih Randolph with 10 points each.

Seniors honored were Mariah Butler, Dominique Morrison and Anayaih Randolph.

The Lady Govs posted an impressive 13 wins this season against nine overall defeats.

The boys team was on the road at Appomattox and they fell short, 69-43.

Jaren Purvis led the offense with 16 points while Houston Carter contributed 10.

Both teams are waiting for when and where they will be seeded for the playoffs.
