Police: Driver blamed wind in Appomattox tractor-trailer wreck

Traffic was reduced for several hours this morning to one lane on U.S. 460 East in Appomattox near its intersection with Mountain Cut Road.

About 5:45 a.m., a tractor trailer from Martin Trucking, a Radford Company, drove off the road striking a guard rail, Virginia State Police Trooper J.M. Buzzard said.

The truck continued for about a half mile, destroying part of the guard rail off the eastbound lanes.

Buzzard said the male driver of the truck told him that the wind had pushed the truck, laden with trees, off the road.

The truck sustained damage to its rear tires and frame. Buzzard said the driver is charged with failing to maintain control of his vehicle.

Around 8:50 a.m., the Virginia Department of Transportation said the accident scene had been cleared up.
