"A life well lived" Anita Crowell, 97, died on Friday, June 26, 2020, in her beloved Bedford, Va. She was born on January 11, 1923, in Woonsocket, R.I., a daughter of the late Delphus and Emma (Cote) Duval. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Everett "Peewee" Crowell; son, Bruce Crowell; two brothers and three sisters. When Anita wasn't motorcycling with her husband, Peewee, hiking with the Happy Hikers, working out at the "Y", or doing crafts, she was always doing something for someone else. Her thoughtfulness and generosity are renowned from Connecticut to Virginia to California. And her brownies were heavenly! "A life well lived", indeed! She is survived by her daughter, Janice Crowell of Grass Valley, Calif.; granddaughter, Hollen (Tim) Monroe of Durham, Conn.; niece and nephew, Sharon and Tom Bolles of Bedford; sister-in-law, Joyce Majeski of Meriden, Conn.; beloved friends, Craig and Jan Morrow of Herndon, Va., Carl and Dot Craig, Case and Coby Pieterman, all of Bedford, Va.; and many others. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Genell Foster Bass, 91, of Concord, died on Saturday, June 27, 2020, at Liberty Ridge. She was the wife of the late James Alvin Bass. Born in Lynchburg on January 5, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Erna Holland and Courtney F. Foster. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a member of the Eastern Star-Appomattox #10. She is survived by three sons, J. Phillip Bass and wife, Connie, of Concord, Thomas "Tommy" Bass and wife, Linda, and Richard A. Bass and wife, Teresa, all of Lynchburg; one sister, Jean Braswell of Naruna; two grandchildren, Greg Bass and wife, Anna, of Rustburg and Justin Bass of Lynchburg; two step grandchildren, Brian Ragland and wife, Marie, of Hoover, Alabama, and Kevin Ragland and wife, Tracy, of Lynchburg; seven great-grandchildren, Joey, Dylan, Payton, Hayley, Nicholas, Katelyn and Willow; three sisters-in-law, Myrtice Foster and Juanita Foster and Shirley Bullen, all of Naruna. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffery Paul Bass; six brothers, Keith Foster, Bob Foster, Sonny Foster, Billy Foster, Tony Foster and Bert Foster; five sisters, Rebecca "Becky" Ward, Helen Clark, Arline George, Alice Pool and Lois Pool. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, June 30, 2020, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Chad Harris, the Rev. Jimmy George and the Rev. Frank Casper, officiating. Burial will follow in Concord Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Thelma Jean Clay Harris, 81, of Charlotte Court House, came to the end of her journey and went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 27, 2020, at the Woodview Nursing Home. To everyone who knew her, she was one of a kind. She was greatly loved and will be sorely missed. She was married first to the late Willard Tune Harris and second to the late Kenneth Lee Bowyer Sr. Mrs. Harris was born in Halifax County on August 29, 1938, a daughter of the late Willie Thomas Clay and Beatrice Barksdale Clay. She was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and an employee of the United States Department of Agriculture. She is survived by three daughters, Darlene H. Smith (Donnie) of Phenix, Bonnie H. Fenton (John) of Woodbridge, Laurie H. Foster of Phenix; six grandchildren, Derek Smith (Julie), Dane Smith (Tiffany), Candace Chambers (Matthew), Cory Fenton (Maddie), Aurelie Foster, Casey Fenton (Lucy); eight great-grandchildren, Kylie, Trevor, Caleb, Deacon, Greysen, Walker, Thoren, Logan; six sisters, Prindle Dalton, Norma Kendrick, Verna Conner, Ethel Bea Moore, Ramona Elliott, and Elaine McGuire. She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Lou H. Foster Jr; two sisters, Christine Jones, Lucille Pruitt; three brothers, Douglas, Marvin, and Glenn Clay. A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Allan Murphy with interment to follow in the church cemetery.
