The original text with this photograph from 1958 read: “Dairy barns remodeled -- Remodeling of three farm buildings at Lynchburg Training School and Hospital is well under way by C.H. Hancock & Sons, Inc. When completed, the buildings will house ambulatory patients. … Buildings at right are being remodeled as dormitories, offices and day rooms.”
June 24, 1964 Original text: Training school land up for sale -- Robert Stein, director of buildings and grounds for Lynchburg Training School and Hospital looks over a portion of the LTSH 666 acres, which have been declared surplus and are up for sale. Sealed bids will be recieved on the property until July 21. The land is considered valuable for possible industrial development. The line of trees at right and in the background follow the course of the James River which is located on the property.
April 8, 1965 Original text: High Bid -- A total of 666 acres of surplus land at Lynchburg Training School and Hospital along the James River was sold today at auction for $81,000 to a Lynchburg group headed by Mrs. George E. Flippin Jr. Hopkins Bros. Realty Corp. sold the land at auction and five other persons bid on the property.

Resident Timmy Hurley and his teacher Larry Parks share a moment in 1983. Many Amherst County residents have fond memories of the residents and staff at CVTC through the years.

The gravesite for Emma Buck, Carrie Buck's mother, at the Central Virginia Training Center originally was unmarked. Emma Buck, like her daughter, was committed to the institution. Emma Buck died at the Madison Heights institution and her daughter wasn't informed until she came for a visit. By that time, Emma Buck already had been buried in a then-unmarked grave.

A cross at the cemetery at the Central Virginia Training Center in Amherst on Oct. 25, 2019. The cemetery has more than 1,000 grave sites and is on about 5 acres.
The lobby of the administrative building holds the few remaining artifacts left on campus — the grandfather clock bearing Priddy’s name and paintings reflecting campus life. Most items from the campus of historical significance have been turned over to the Library of Virginia for preservation.

A building where sterilizations took place at the Central Virginia Training Center. The building is no longer in use and has fallen into a state of disrepair. Sterilization procedures continued at the Madison Heights facility until 1972.
