The University of Lynchburg’s Professional Development Institute has entered into an exclusive partnership with Forth Valley College in Scotland and the Royal Rum Society to expand access to its Certificate in Rum & Sugar Cane Spirits to learners across Europe.
According to John A. Zinn III, PDI’s executive director, the partnership reflects growing international interest in the 10-week, online certificate program, which has attracted participants from across the United States and around the world, including Canada, Thailand, and Turkey.
“This partnership represents an important step in extending the reach of a program that has resonated with learners well beyond the United States,” Zinn said. “We’ve seen strong interest from individuals seeking a deeper understanding of rum and sugar cane spirits, and this collaboration allows us to better serve that global audience.”

Zinn added that the partnership creates new opportunities for learners to access specialized training focused on the history, production, and cultural significance of rum and other sugar cane spirits.
Developed by Master Rummelier Greg Hill, founder of the Royal Rum Society, the certificate program provides a structured exploration of the global rum industry while connecting participants with industry perspectives and professional networks.
“Since 2017, the Rummelier program has experienced remarkable growth, with graduates now representing more than 40 countries worldwide,” Hill said. “Our partnerships with the University of Lynchburg and Forth Valley College have strengthened the program and expanded opportunities for students, enthusiasts, and industry professionals to deepen their understanding of sugar cane spirits.”
Through the partnership, Forth Valley will promote and support the program in Scotland and throughout Europe.
Known for its industry-focused approach to education and training, Forth Valley offers programs in brewing, distilling, hospitality, and industrial biotechnology. It maintains a fully operational glass distillation plant at its state-of-the-art campus and works closely with industry partners across the drinks sector.
“Forth Valley College is renowned for its industry-led approach to skills and training, making this partnership a natural fit,” said Jamie Allan, Forth Valley’s global partnership manager. “We are excited to offer learners across Europe access to this innovative program and the opportunity to develop knowledge that supports both professional advancement and personal interest in the global spirits industry.”
Delivered online and designed for working adults, the certificate program provides flexible access for enthusiasts, hospitality professionals, distillers, distillery workers, and others seeking to expand their knowledge of rum and related industries.
PDI is part of the University’s broader commitment to workforce development, lifelong learning, and global engagement.
“This program reflects our approach to professional education,” Zinn said. “It combines subject-matter expertise, practical learning, and access to a broader community of learners and professionals.”
