Construction is underway this week for the new Miller Park Pool, keeping on schedule the City of Lynchburg’s effort to deliver a new, improved community pool for the 2027 summer season. Following a competitive bidding process completed in August, the city has awarded the construction contract to Jamerson-Lewis Construction. The construction is targeted for completion in June 2027.
“This is an ambitious timeline, and our team has been intentional about keeping each phase of the project moving forward with the goal of welcoming the community back to Miller Park Pool for the 2027 summer season,” said Wyatt Woody, director of Lynchburg Parks & Recreation.
The new Miller Park Pool was shaped by public input and designed to provide an accessible, welcoming destination where residents of all ages can gather to play, swim and connect. Highlights include:

The former Miller Park Pool, built in 1986, was experiencing significant leaking and had reached the typical 30- to 50-year lifespan of a public pool. Given the facility’s age and condition, as well as unknown soil conditions beneath the existing pool, the city recommended constructing a new pool rather than rehabilitating the existing facility. Lynchburg City Council approved funding for the project as part of the FY 2026-2030 Capital Improvement Program in June 2025.
Upon approval of the funds, the project team performed survey, geotechnical work and utility location to clear the way for demolition in early 2026 following a competitive bidding process. Because of the significant leaks in the former pool and concerns about the soil conditions beneath it, the city completed demolition before finalizing the new pool’s design, allowing for the evaluation of conditions within the pool footprint before proceeding with construction.
After demolition was completed in February 2026, the pool’s design was finalized, then reviewed by the city’s Technical Review Committee before being advertised for competitive construction bids in June. The bid process was completed in August.
From the outset, the city established an accelerated project schedule with the goal of completing the new facility in time for the 2027 summer season. With the construction contract now awarded, the project remains on schedule, with construction expected to begin in September and completion targeted for June 2027.
